Which rug size? Three rules of thumb

The preview shows the effect; the size is for the tape measure. These interior rules of thumb help you choose:

• Living room: the rug is big enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to stand on it. That ties the seating together.
• Dining area: the chairs stay on the rug even when pulled back.
• Bedroom: the rug reaches out from under both sides of the bed, so the first step in the morning is a soft one.

The right room photo for rugs

For rugs, the floor matters most: plenty of it has to be in the shot. The HomeVisioner widget shows these two examples on its upload screen too.

✓ What works

• Wide angle, room clearly visible
• Hold the phone in landscape
• Well lit, ideally daylight
• The floor, or the surface the product goes on, is in the shot
• As uncluttered as possible

✗ Better avoid

• Close-ups and product shots
• Crops that leave out the floor
• Dark or blurred photos
• People in the shot: photos with a recognisable face are not processed

What the preview does for rugs

Colour, pattern and style alongside your floor and furniture are what a preview is good at. Exact size is not: scale and proportions are an approximation. Fine patterns can differ in detail from the original – when in doubt, compare with the product photos.
